Geert Goiris - new PLAKT-poster on the facade of De Garage

Geert Goiris is a photographer who always searches a feeling of alienation between humans and environment. With his wide format analogue camera’s he travels to deserted landscapes. From the icy arctic over arrid deserts to deserted modernistic buildings: he documents them all with a sharp, almost sacred calmth.

The images of Geert Goiris seem almost normal. At the same time, they carry something menacing, as of they float between reality and myth, past and present. Goiris calls his approach “anticipating photography”: he doesn’t only document what is but also what could come. He looks for signs of ecological or social changes that aren’t entirely visible yet.

For Left Bank, he aimed his lens towards the silky webs that sometimes cover trees and shrubberies in spring. From up close they almost seem architectural: a gate or veil that draws you into a different world. In public space this frail image is a silent interruption of the urban bustle. It reminds us of our own nothingness in comparison to the silent indifference of nature. In this calmness there seems tob e something that still needs to happen. A silent foreshadow of what still has to come.

With PLAKT, Kunsthal Mechelen and Artlead bring contemporary art into the public space. By inviting artists to create posters for the facades of art organizations, the city itself becomes a place for encounter, reflection, and imagination.
