“The Last Place They Thought Of” onderzoekt de begrippen territorium en ruimte vanuit een zwart en vrouwelijk of non-binair perspectief. Het brengt een uitgebreide selectie werken uit verschillende disciplines en delen van de wereld.
De titel is een referentie naar een hoofdstuk uit het essay van Kathrine McKittrick. Zij nodigt ons uit om na te denken over het potentieel van een Black concept van geografie, als alternatief op wat zij traditionele, nietzwarte geografie noemt. Traditionele geografie maakt de ruimte ééndimensionaal en heeft enkel oog voor wat rationeel is door feiten en coördinaten. De obsessie met het zichtbare en meetbare zorgt dat het persoonlijke aan de kant wordt gezet.
Het nieuwe perspectief maakt plaats voor herinneringen, verbeelding, representaties en ervaringen van zij die in de marge worden geplaatst. Het biedt ruimte voor verhalen die zelden verteld en verspreid worden en verrijken onze blik. Elke kunstenaar laat zien hoe sociale positie de vorm van ruimtes verandert. Geografie transformeert door het leven van zwarte vrouwen te integreren en open te staan voor het potentieel dat dit losmaakt.
Elementen die vaak als subjectief worden beschouwd zoals de verbeelding, dromen, zorg, spiritualiteit en traditie spelen een belangrijke rol in het oeuvre van iedere kunstenaar. Ze verleggen grenzen, connecteren hun persoonlijke verhalen met zij die opzij gezet worden en tonen dat hun unieke perspectief inclusief kan zijn en nieuwe ruimte kan creëren.
Over de curator: Sorana Munsya
Sorana Munsya is een onafhankelijk curator en psycholoog. Ze woont en werkt in Brussel. Ze is vooral geïnteresseerd in thema’s zoals vluchten en genezing en hun relatie tot blackness in het Westen, vooral Europa.
Ze focust zich op hedendaagse kunst van Afrikaanse en zwarte kunstenaars. Tot nu toe organiseerde ze bijvoorbeeld de solo-tentoonstelling van Leonard Pongo in Bozar (2021), van Michèle Magema in Extra City (2021) en de groepstentoonstelling “The Act of Breathing” (2022) in samenwerking met Kanal-Centre Pompidou.
Ze was assistent curator van de 5de Biënnale van hedendaagse kunst van Lubumbashi en heeft in verschillende catalogi haar bijdrage geleverd. Ze is lid van het curatorencollectief Celador en bestuurslid van The Constant Now. Ze is ook deel van het redactieteam van “GLEAN”.
