  • From 12 December 2026 until Valentine’s Day 2027, Kunsthal Mechelen will present Bless This Mess, Jurgen Ot’s largest institutional solo exhibition to date.

For over two decades, Ots' practice has been focused on collecting, ordering, and recontextualising found materials, archival remnants, and obsolete and cast-aside artifacts, which he reconfigures and combines into vivid installations and assemblages. Though the artist can also be found gleaning materials in alleyways, online marketplaces, personal collections, and even institutional archives, his work is anchored in a sustained engagement with Brussels’ Jeu de Balle flea market (Vossenplein), a constantly changing living archive of urban history, where disparate artifacts from across time and space find themselves, and where informal exchanges take place and micro-histories flow.

This daily routine has sensitized him to unexpected discoveries and aleatory encounters, a deep awareness of not only the latent associations and histories embedded in materials, but also the affective power that objects and images can have, even when detached from context or interpretation.

Comprised of new and recent works, the exhibition emphasizes bold gestures, overwhelming sensations, brutal dynamics, hypnotic repetitions, and an excess of material and meaning, thereby uncovering the psychodynamics integral to his work.
